To lower your fuel costs-- whether it be for your car or for your heat in the winter-- the same rule applies.
If you are trying to save on fuel for your car then you should make some changes. First and foremost, have it serviced and have the oil changed to improve it is running up to par. Secondly, don't hurry up to get to a stop sign or a red light. Stopping and starting wastes an awful lot of gas. And lastly, stop making extra trips that you don't have to make. If you need to go to the doctor, need milk, and have to go shopping for something-- do them all together. Plan your route so you don't have to go back out (especially if it's where you had to go to get to the doctors' office).
When it comes to your furnace, it should be serviced and cleaned every year anyway to make sure that it won't let you down come the cold weather. Keep your thermostat at 67 degrees. If you have to wear a sweater because it's not warm enough for you, then by all means do so. Make sure all the cracks and windows are airtight so you aren't letting the heat out and the cold in. Also, if you have an attic, make sure the attic door is closed so you aren't trying to heat an area that doesn't need it. The worst thing you can do is to turn your thermostat up and down all the time as it uses more fuel.
